A safe stay at Ballermann is possible if basic precautions are observed.
Safety Concerns at Ballermann – What You Should Know
Ballermann on Mallorca doesn't have the best reputation. Between partying tourists and occasional incidents like thefts or violent episodes, many ask: is Playa de Palma really safe? According to Javier Santos, head of the local police station, you can have a carefree holiday there with a bit of caution.
The Reality on Site
Most guests have no problems at all. Santos describes the majority of holidaymakers as peaceful people who just want to have fun. Of course there are exceptions: alcohol often plays a role. Some start drinking early in the morning and quickly lose control.
But compared to the number of visitors, violent or sexual crimes are rare, Santos adds. The increased police presence, including even German officers, helps raise the level of safety.
Con Artists and Simple Thefts
The biggest problem is theft and scams. Shell game operators and "carnation women" are well-known tricksters. While some distract you with an apparently harmless game, others reach for your wallet while offering you a flower. A relaxed holiday mindset and perhaps one drink too many make it easy for offenders.
Practical Safety Tips
- Do not leave valuables in plain sight – neither on the beach nor on restaurant tables.
- Make sure no one can watch your PIN entry at ATMs.
- Be especially careful after consuming alcohol and avoid being distracted by strangers.
Night Swimming – a Risk
Even if the sea looks tempting at night, you should refrain from swimming. Dangerous currents and poor visibility make swimming risky – lifeguards are not on duty at that time anyway.
Avoid Luxury Traps
Visible jewelry like expensive watches attracts criminals. There have been cases where perpetrators even carried knives to cut off bracelets. These items are better kept in your hotel's safe.
Observe Local Rules
Nudity or consuming alcohol in public is prohibited – as is wearing swimwear outside the beach area. Those who break these rules can face hefty fines.
Summary
Mallorca remains a popular travel destination, including around the infamous Ballermann. With attention and respect for local customs, every visitor can enjoy a relaxed holiday.
