Celebrations took place on Playa de Palma on October 2: champagne on the terrace, a moving anthem, and familiar faces from the German-speaking community.
Relaxed Atmosphere at Playa de Palma
On the evening of October 2, about one hundred invited guests gathered at the Joy Palace of the Universal Hotel Neptuno — a terrace with sea view, a light breeze from the Passeig, and lamps that slowly came on. Around 7:30 p.m., the first glass of champagne rang out; voices from Germany mingled with the sound of the waves. It was not a stiff reception, but more a meeting of neighbors, acquaintances, and a few familiar faces.
A speech that made people think
The host was the German consul, Wolfgang Engstler, who in his remarks recalled the events of 1989 and warned that democracy should not be taken for granted. He spoke softly, looking toward the sea, and at the end announced that he and his wife Elisabeth would leave the island next year — a sentence that briefly brought silence, then sparked conversations about memories of shared celebrations.
Music that touched the heart
An unexpected highlight came from the artist Juanjo Monserrat, born in Arenal, a two-time Latin Grammy winner. He began with La Balanguera — and suddenly many guests stood still. Several Mallorcan pieces followed, with applause in between and a few tears from those who love the island deeply.
Familiar faces, relaxed conversations
Among the attendees were people you often meet here: Peter Maffay, Tina Ruland, Sabine Christiansen, Martin Semmelrogge, and Uwe Ochsenknecht mixing with community representatives and cultural movers. Conversations centered on new projects, the next theater season, and the best paella in town. We also heard the laughter of Will Kauffmann and brief exchanges with Sandra Lipski about film ideas.
Personally, I found the mix beautiful: celebrities who don't keep to themselves, music with local roots, and a consul who made clear that celebration and reflection belong together. Anyone walking along the Playa around 9 p.m. still saw groups discussing the end of a pleasant evening — some already planning the next gathering.
