Eurowings Reintroduces Seat Pockets – More Storage for Passengers from 2027

The airline that operates many routes to Mallorca plans to reintroduce seat pockets in the new 737 Max. Crews and passengers had repeatedly requested more storage space.

More Space for Phone, Water and More: Seat Pockets Return

The other day at the gate in Palma, as I looked at the cabin of an aircraft, I realized again that some seats have nowhere to put a water bottle. Eurowings now wants to change that and plans to reintroduce seat pockets in the new Boeing 737 Max, which will be delivered from 2027.

Why the Return?

The airline justifies the decision by saying that crew and passengers had asked for it more often. Practically, a compartment for the safety card, phone, or the small water bottle is handy. At the same time, there were reasons why the pockets were omitted on newer aircraft: they quickly collect trash, hang down, or require more frequent repairs. Technicians and cleaning staff complained about that again and again — and that's a point you can't gloss over.

According to the airline, around 40 of about 100 aircraft are currently without these pockets — including many A320neo and A321neo planes as well as some older A320s with special seats. The 737 Max, it is said, will now receive an updated solution with multiple compartments so that cards, magazines and other items no longer lie crosswise.

What does this mean for Mallorca travelers?

For us on the island, this is a small but noticeable relief. Short-haul flights to Palma are often crowded, and when everyone has their laptop, headphones and drinks on their lap, it quickly becomes uncomfortable. A new pocket under the front seat sounds like a simple improvement — and sometimes exactly such small details are enough to make the start of the vacation more relaxed.

Although the decision also makes maintenance sense, many passengers are likely to welcome the change. The company emphasizes that this is a more modern design: separate compartments, more robust materials, and less chance of something getting caught during boarding and disembarking.

The question remains whether this ultimately increases cleaning effort or whether the new construction minimizes these problems. My tip: on the next flight to Palma, take a close look — perhaps the travel guide will no longer lie on your lap.

Short verdict: A small change, but practical. From 2027 the new 737 Max are to be equipped with seat pockets — welcome news for everyone who likes a bit of storage on board.
