On the MA-19 near Santanyí, an SUV crashed head-on into a truck. Minutes earlier, the driver's wife reportedly informed the emergency dispatch center of suicidal intent. Police are investigating.
Frontal collision on the MA-19 – investigations underway
\nYesterday, around shortly before 3:00 PM, a serious traffic accident occurred on the MA-19 near Santanyí: an SUV collided head-on with a truck. On site were the Guardia Civil, emergency services and a scene-investigation team. The road remained closed for hours, traffic was diverted – it was late in the evening before everything was released again.
\nVictims and initial measures
\nThe driver of the SUV, a man about 70 years old, reportedly did not wear a seat belt according to initial findings. He sustained life-threatening injuries. The truck driver was also seriously injured. Both were extricated by ambulances and taken to hospitals. Residents report sirens and frantic activity, with a neighbor saying: “The air was full of blue lights; you could immediately sense that it was bad.”
\nEmergency call and suspicion of intentional action
\nParticularly concerning is new information from the family circle: minutes before the impact, the man's wife reportedly called the emergency number and said that her husband had expressed suicidal thoughts. This prompted investigators to examine the incident as a possible suicide attempt.
\nThe Guardia Civil is collecting witness statements, evaluating vehicle data and the locations of crash marks. Whether it was an intentional collision has not been confirmed – further technical investigations and interviews are still pending.
\nWhat the neighborhood says
\nIn Santanyí people speak softly about it: everyone knows each other, they know the stories. Some remember the SUV that often drove alone; others describe the driver as withdrawn. Such details say little about motives, but they show how closely such an event affects the community.
\nIf you need help: In emotional crises it is important not to stay alone. Emergency numbers and local counseling centers are available around the clock.
\nLooking ahead
\nThe investigations continue. In the coming days, the police will publish findings on driving direction, braking distance and possible technical defects. For the relatives and those involved it will be a difficult time – and for drivers on the MA-19 a reminder to drive slowly and be attentive.
\nWe will keep you updated here as soon as authorities release new information.
