After months of investigations, the police arrested a 40-year-old man, accused of taking payments totaling around €30,000 from about 20 victims. He allegedly offered work, collected deposits, and never delivered.
Arrest following alleged scams with handyman offers
\nIn the early hours, in northern Mallorca, a 40-year-old man was arrested, accused by the police of defrauding numerous customers with allegedly cheap painting and renovation offers. Investigators mention around 20 victims and damage of about 30,000 euros.
\n\nHow the scam worked
\nAccording to reports, the suspect posted his offers on various classified ads portals and enticed customers with particularly low prices. Many paid a deposit to secure materials or reserve appointments. But the work was never carried out. To gain the victims' trust, the defendant apparently used the names of well-known companies—and even sent copies of supposed identification documents.
\n\nWhen some clients requested their money back, the situation escalated: according to statements, the man reacted aggressively and is said to have threatened violence. Such threats further unsettled the victims given the situation.
\n\nInvestigations and arrest
\nThe investigators worked on the case for several months. After witness interviews, review of chat histories, and reports from victims, investigators were able to trace a lead to the suspect's finca in the island's northern part. There, the arrest ultimately took place; the man is now in custody on suspicion of fraud and threats.
\n\nOfficials on the scene described the situation as a typical example of fraud via online platforms: quick deals, deposits, and no written contracts. The police stressed that investigations are not yet fully completed and further complaints are being reviewed.
\n\nWhat affected people and those interested should know now
\nAnyone who commissioned craft work in the past months and noticed unusual incidents should contact the local police station. In everyday life it's advisable to be critical of online offers: request proof, check references, not pay in cash, and, if possible, have contracts in writing.
\n\nThese cases are annoying. Especially here on the island, where one still settles things with a handshake, fraud hurts twice. A straightforward neighborly tip: it's better to ask one more time than later regret the small print.
