Late Sunday evening around 10:30 p.m., the calm promenade by Palma's waterfront briefly erupted in uproar: Two young men are said to have threatened several tourists there with a knife and a screwdriver to extort money and valuables. The victims managed to escape; they alerted a patrol, which intervened a short time later.

Witnesses, Sirens, and a Rapid Response

I happened to be nearby and heard excited voices calling down the street. Eyewitnesses describe that the tourists were initially surprised, then fled quickly. A police patrol, which happened to be patrolling nearby, apparently reacted immediately and was able to confront the two suspects in a side street not far from the beach. On-site, the alleged weapon was recovered.

The National Police are conducting the investigations. In initial interviews, the suspects have been linked to three similar cases in the past months, an officer said. The police did not yet provide concrete details on identity or age — only that the suspects are young men.

Victims Safe — But Unsettled

The tourists did not suffer serious physical injuries, according to the initial report; mentally, however, the moments of shock ran deep. One of the affected persons later got into a taxi, still slightly trembling, toward the city center. Such incidents raise questions immediately: How safe do you feel in the evening at the beach? And what could the city do to make strolls along the promenade more relaxed again?

A resident who regularly walks the dog late at night told me: "You can tell that there have been more incidents in the last few months. In the past, you could still walk through at ten; today people look twice before stopping."

Further Investigations Under Way

Investigators are now checking whether the arrested men are indeed behind the three similar incidents. Crime-scene investigators searched the area for traces, and the police are reviewing surveillance camera footage. Until solid results emerge, many questions remain — particularly whether this was organized crime or lone offenders.

If you have tips or observed something, please contact the Palma police station. Any information could be important.

For tourists and residents in the area, a sense of insecurity remains for now. However, the brief but swift police response shows: the officers were vigilant — and that apparently prevented something worse.
