Agricultural Fair in Artà: A Day Between the Scent of Stables and Old Machines

Today is again one of those days in Artà when the village square smells of fresh hay and grilled meat, and the streets in the morning are full of neighbors who first grab a coffee. The annual agricultural fair—often simply called fira in Mallorquin—runs from about 10:00 a.m. until early evening and draws visitors from the entire northeast of the island.

What there is to see

\n

At the stalls there are cows, chickens, pigs, and a few lively farm dogs. Next to them, dealers line up with agricultural machinery, plow parts, and tractors that you would otherwise only see in the fields. Especially noticeable this year: an old water mill, brought back into operation, ready to grind again with a little oil and a lot of patience. The mill stands near a small stream, the stones grind, and you can watch flour being made – a surprisingly exciting sight for children.

More than just display

Besides the animal exhibition there are demonstrations: sheep shearing, feeding times, and a jury that evaluates dairy cattle. Small craft stalls offer baskets, jars of honey, and cheese, often still with the family label. In one corner someone grills pa amb oli on a large grill, and in the afternoon a local band, Plaza de la Vila, plays—not too loud, pleasantly authentic.

For families: Children can ride ponies, stack hay, and in a craft workshop make figures from natural materials. Many parents appreciate the relaxed atmosphere; it's not a fairground, but a real community gathering.

What it's all for

The fair is more than nostalgia. For many farming operations it's an opportunity to do direct sales, make contacts, and exchange news about seeds or technology. On a small podium, experts speak about sustainable irrigation and local varieties – the topic of water remains present on the island after all.

If you are in Artà today, stroll across the square, try a piece of cheese, listen to the tractors, and take a look at the old mill. It is exactly this mix of practicality and tradition that keeps such fairs lively.
