Autumn Arrives: Storms, Rain, and Up to Three-Meter Waves on Mallorca's Coasts

After a few warm days, an Atlantic front brings wind, coastal gusts, and locally heavy showers — walks along stone breakwaters are not advisable this Sunday.

Autumn Arrives Sooner Than Expected

Some of us still enjoyed a cappuccino on the terrace, others rode today along the Passeig Marítim — and then, around 8 o'clock, the first chill set in. What feels like the abrupt end of late-summer warmth is actually a real weather shift: dense clouds, shower clusters, and a freshening north to northeast wind.

What can we expect concretely?

The national weather authority Aemet reports Mallorca and Menorca with considerable cloudiness and scattered showers, especially in the morning hours. During the day it opens up here and there, but it will still be gray. Temperatures fall: in Palma only about 24 °C will be reached, inland sometimes 22–23 °C. The nights stay comparatively mild, that is the only consolation.

Coastal warning: Three-meter waves possible

Important point: For parts of the coast there is a warning due to high surf. Models show that at exposed sections — for example at Port de Sóller, Cala Ratjada and parts of Alcúdia — waves of up to three meters are possible. The emergency dispatch center 112 has already activated the Meteobal system. Please avoid breakwaters, cliffs and promenades where spray can surprise people.

A fisherman in Portixol, whom I briefly met at the harbor pub, merely shrugged: "We’re not going out today, no risk. The boats stay moored." Good advice. Also kayakers and kite surfers: stay on land.

Practical tips for the day

If you still want to go out — and many Mallorcans will, because shopping and child care continue — then pack a rain jacket, wear sturdy shoes and stay away from cliffs. Pay attention to local announcements; buses may be delayed by gusts; on the MA-13 to the Serra de Tramuntana expect opposing traffic and wet roads.

In short: autumn has decided to move in. Not dramatic, but noticeable. If you’re still on the terrace this evening, you’d better have the rain umbrella ready — and check the boat one more time.
