By Mistake at the Exit Control: Mallorca Holidaymaker Ends Up in Custody, Friend Pays Fine

A 34-year-old traveler returning from Mallorca went astray at Cologne/Bonn Airport and mistakenly joined the line for the exit control — an outstanding arrest warrant was discovered and a fine paid.

A Small Detour with Big Consequences

Sometimes a wrong turn can decide the day's plans — in the case of a 34-year-old traveler returning from Mallorca, it was more than that. On Sunday morning, according to officers at Cologne/Bonn Airport, the man after landing took a wrong turn and ended up in the area for travelers heading out. Instead of heading toward the baggage claim, he entered the queue for exit control and was checked there.

Control with a Surprising Result

That a traveler from the Schengen area would routinely come under police scrutiny is unusual. But exactly that happened: during the identity check it emerged that the 34-year-old had an outstanding enforcement order. Specifically, an open fine of 220 euros for a prior assault — alternatively, 22 days in custody would have been due.

Alcohol played no role, according to the police. The officers stressed that the man was by no means intoxicated on arrival. Such misdirections at the airport are not uncommon. Terminal 2 at Cologne/Bonn, with its maze-like corridors and signs, can confuse more than one — especially early in the morning when the coffee machine hasn't fully kicked in yet.

Friend steps in, case closed

The man spent only a short time in police custody. An acquaintance, apparently informed about the situation, visited him later that day at the station and paid the due 220 euros. With that, the measures were completed and the 34-year-old could leave the police station again. The moral of the story: pay close attention to signs — or at least save a good phone number in the mobile.

The incident serves as a reminder of how quickly a harmless misdirection can lead to unpleasant consequences. Those who travel through airports frequently know the little chaos: missing a sign, taking the wrong door, and suddenly finding yourself in the wrong queue. In this case, luck aside there was a serious background — albeit with a fairly mild ending.

Note: For questions about airport procedures or enforcement measures, the information desks at the terminal or the responsible police and judicial authorities usually provide assistance.
