The caffeinated mate drink Club‑Mate is now available at several Müller stores on Mallorca. We tell you where to find it and what it tastes like.
Club‑Mate comes to Mallorca – finally on the shelf
Yesterday afternoon, shortly after 4 p.m., I was standing in the Müller on Plaça España and thought: oh, I know that. There, between shampoo and sunscreen, lined up a row of green bottles: Club‑Mate. Anyone familiar with Berlin café or techno gossip knows this isn't an ordinary soft drink event. On the island the arrival is more of a small thing — but one that makes many curious.
Where you can get the bottle
According to distribution, the brewery has supplied the drugstore chains on the island. I took note of where the shelves are already stocked: Müller branches in Palma (Nou Levant and Plaça España) as well as in towns like Llucmajor, Capdepera, Santanyí, Son Servera, Manacor, Campos, Inca and Santa Ponsa. The recommended price for the 0.5‑liter bottle is about €2.79. That's not a bargain, but not a luxury either — more of a try-out price.
How does it taste here by the sea?
Club‑Mate is not a classic cola substitute. It's lighter, somewhat earthier and has a tart sweetness. Mate leaves bring caffeine and a bitter, almost tea-like note. On the beach with a handful of ice cubes and a slice of lemon it fares surprisingly well. I met two young people from Palma who said they drink it "when you need energy without wanting coffee."
Brief history — and why this matters here
The drink is based on South American mate tea, which has been consumed for generations in countries like Argentina and Paraguay. The Club‑Mate we know today emerged through carbonation and a light sweetness. The brand has been distributed by a German brewery since the 1990s and is now sold in many countries. For Mallorca this means: more choice on the drinks shelf, especially for people looking for something other than iced tea or energy drinks.
A few local impressions
At the Müller in Plaça España an employee named Ana packed a bottle for me and laughed, "Many tourists ask for it." At the market in Santa Catalina a barista told me he was considering offering the drink as a special mix — with lavender or lemongrass. A little tip from me: well chilled, with little ice, not overspiced, and it pairs well with long walks along the Passeig promenade.
Will Club‑Mate become the island's new favorite? Hard to say. But one thing is clear: if you like variety, you'll now find another option — right around the corner at Müller. It's worth trying. And if you like, I'll bring a bottle next time too, without any hipster legends, just as a refreshment against afternoon tiredness.
