Driver Surrenders After Fatal Crash Near Son Banya

In the night between Sunday and Monday, a severe frontal collision occurred on the rural road between Mercapalma and Son Banya. A 31-year-old man died at the scene from his injuries. The atmosphere at the crash site was somber in the morning: oil and tire marks on the asphalt, shattered glass, and the streetlights flickered in the light rain as recovery vehicles began their work.

Confession? He Says He Cannot Remember

Yesterday morning, a 26-year-old man, accompanied by his lawyer, appeared at a Palma police station and turned himself in. According to authorities, the man said he could not remember the events of the night. He was placed in provisional custody and is expected to be brought before the examining magistrate later today.

Police investigators are currently examining whether the 26-year-old is responsible for the maneuver that led to the collision. According to people close to the investigation, the man had already been reported the day before for reckless driving. There is also suspicion that he may have participated in illegal street racing on Mallorca.

Witnesses, Traces, Legal Steps

According to witnesses, several vehicles were traveling at high speed along the stretch shortly before the accident. Residents reported screeching tires and loud engine noise around 1:45 a.m. Police are securing traces: brake marks, vehicle parts, and CCTV footage are being evaluated.

Emergency doctors and rescue services arrived quickly but could not save the 31-year-old. The public prosecutor's office is now investigating on suspicion of negligent homicide or intentional endangerment of road traffic – exact charges will be determined only after the evidence is examined.

The victim's family has been informed and is being assisted by psychosocial services. In the neighborhood, worries and anger spread: "This is not the first time people are drag racing at night here," said a neighbor who only wanted to give her first name, Marta.

The authorities are asking witnesses to come forward if they have observations or mobile videos of the incident. The case will reveal more in the coming days: appearance before a judge, analysis of forensic findings, and possible further arrests are probably not the end of the investigations.

Update: As soon as new information from the police or police departments becomes available, we will report further.
