Glowing Evening – Majorca in Red Light

Many places, a shared wonder: From the Passeig to the coast

Late on Monday the streets of Palma were full of people staring west with their phones raised. On the Passeig del Born the air smelled of fresh coffee, mingling with the salty breeze from the nearby harbor. Older couples sat on park benches, tourists pushed prams past, a bicycle bell rang softly — and overhead stretched a sky that faded into orange, pink, purple and in places a deep, glowing red.

Evenings like this are not uncommon here, but the intensity was unusual: in municipalities such as Calvià, Campos, Son Ferriol and along the northeast coast near Alcanada locals and visitors watched the same play of colors. Photographers and hobby filmmakers stood on cliffs and promenades, fishermen checked their nets briefly, children jumped one more time through the last waves of the day. Why did the sky look like this? When the sun is low, its light has to travel a longer path through the atmosphere. Shortwave blue is scattered more strongly, leaving red and orange. Small particles in the air, such as moisture, cloud edges or dust, enhance this effect and can pull the colors into brightness. Sometimes Saharan dust contributes — this happens especially when easterly winds blow across the sea and carry fine grains with them. The weather on the island remained mild during the day. Despite springlike temperatures around 20–22°C, meteorological warnings were still in place late in the evening: strong gusts were reported for the night, and many heard the wind whistling over roofs and palm trees. So far there have been no reports of damage or incidents; the mood was rather relaxed, as if nature and the weather had put on a small show.

Skies like these are a reminder of why many of us love living here: small, unexpected natural moments that change everyday life and perspective. On the Paseo Marítimo passersby put their cameras aside to simply watch. A street vendor packed up his stall, a couple sat on the breakwater and said nothing, they just watched until the red faded.

What is left to do? For photography fans it's a hint: evening light in the winter half of the year can be surprisingly rewarding — those who combine the next weather alert with a clear horizon often find good motifs. For residents it is an invitation to take a break between appointments and make use of the island hours. In short: such a sunset is not a spectacular sensation, rather a small gift for the day.

And if the wind really picks up today: take care on exposed coastal sections, wear sturdy shoes on the cliff edge, and avoid unnecessary risks for a photo. Otherwise, just sit down, take a breath and enjoy the red — Majorca can seem quietly loud.
