Those who regularly drive along the coastal road Ma-1 have long suspected it: In October extensive works on the road that connects Paguera with the port of Andratx will begin. In total about eleven kilometers of roadway will be refurbished. To be honest — this is urgently needed: potholes, worn spots and patchwork have increased significantly over the summer.

When and how long?

The construction works begin in October and are planned for about six months. A completion is planned for May 2026. In order not to burden daytime traffic further, the asphalt works will take place primarily at night: the closure times apply from Monday to Friday between 23:00 Uhr and 05:00 Uhr. During the day the road remains open to normal traffic.

What does that mean for residents and visitors?

Practically it means: if you return home in the evening from a tapas bar in Paguera or come up the coast from Puerto de Andratx, you may have to re-route — especially on weekdays. The authorities announce local detours and clear signage. Residents already report initial preparations: lanterns are being checked, construction site accesses set up and local bus lines informed. Small business owners near the port have mixed feelings: better road, but nightly construction noise.

Who pays — and what does it cost?

The project is funded by the island administration. The estimated costs are around 6.4 million euros. A hefty sum, but the asphalt belt between the towns should become significantly more durable. Given the heavy traffic load in the region — both by locals and by tourists in the off-season — many see the investment as sensible.

Tips for commuters and night owls

A few practical notes to ease daily life: Plan for a few extra minutes for your evening drives, check local bus timetables (especially lines toward Andratx) and pay attention to temporary signs and traffic lights. Cyclists should be especially careful on the affected nights — the detours occasionally lead over narrower local roads. Oh, and yes: earplugs are not a bad idea for sensitive sleepers if the construction site sits right next door.

Why at night?

The decision to carry out the works mainly at night is pragmatic: by day Ma-1 is heavily trafficked, and longer closures would disrupt traffic flow excessively. At night it is possible to work with focus, the works proceed faster and the accident risk from through traffic decreases. Still, it is clear: neighbors will feel it — temporarily and especially in the first weeks.

In short: It will be seven months with unusual road noise, detours and construction lights. In the end, however, everyone should be traveling more relaxed and safer — and by early summer 2026 at the latest be able to use a noticeably better Ma-1. Until then: drive slowly, stay attentive — and keep in mind the prospect of smooth asphalt in the back of your mind.
