Accident on the Seafront Promenade: Woman Runs Across Street on Red

On Sunday morning, the Paseo Marítimo was filled with its usual mix of joggers, delivery vans and café-goers. At around 10:10 a.m., an accident occurred there in which a woman on the roadway was struck by a car. Eyewitnesses report that she appeared intoxicated and ignored a red pedestrian light.

How the Response Unfolded

A car with a Swedish license plate was driving along Avenida Gabriel Roca when the woman suddenly stepped onto the roadway. The driver could not swerve in time, resulting in a lateral collision. The woman fell and sustained a head injury. At the scene, two ambulances from Falck and SAMU as well as patrol officers from the local police arrived promptly. An emergency logistics vehicle from Service 061 also assisted.

Rescue and Further Treatment: The injured person was initially unresponsive and could not provide responders with information about age or residence. After initial care, she was taken to Juaneda Hospital. No further details about her condition are available yet.

Promenade Between Everyday Life and Risk

The Promenade is no stranger to such scenes: restaurants, bars and hotels line the street, and pedestrians often move between sidewalks and crosswalks here. Yet if on a sunny morning someone intoxicated crosses the street, a second of inattention is enough to change the day's course. You then hear the sirens, a crowd of onlookers forms, and the city administration again calls for more caution.

I know the route well – in the mornings people jog here with headphones, at midday there are tourists about. Precisely because of this, skipped red phases stand out; they are both risky and avoidable. Authorities warn to observe pedestrian signals and to take alcohol in road traffic seriously, whether you are driving or walking.

Takeaway

Incidents like this remind us that beach promenades are not automatically safe. A few seconds of caution can save lives. The police are now investigating exactly how the incident occurred and are examining possible offenses. For the injured one, we hope for a swift recovery – and for the rest of us, a bit more attention in everyday life.
