The old escalators at Palmas Estació Intermodal have served for nearly two decades and will be renewed. Work begins in November—the station will mostly remain in operation.
Finally: Escalator Replacement at Palmas Estació Intermodal
\nFor many commuters it's hardly more than a nuisance, but for parents with strollers or travelers with heavy luggage it's a real relief: the escalators in Palmas' central Estació Intermodal will be renewed. Since 2007 the existing units have served their purpose – now the regional transport association has signed the contract for six new units. Cost: a little over 1.1 million euros.
\nWhat exactly is planned
\nThe works start in November. According to plan, during construction at least one escalator per direction will remain in operation at all times to allow uphill and downhill travel. This is important: in the mornings from 7 to 9 am, most commuters stream through here; in the evenings the station is again full of returnees and evening commuters. Anyone who travels from here toward the airport or the suburbs every day knows the bottlenecks — these should ease noticeably with the new facilities.
\nMore than just new stairs
\nThe renewal of the escalators is only part of a larger modernization program for the station. In addition, there will be new ventilation technology and a comprehensive renovation of the toilets. So it's not only about comfort but also hygiene and air quality — small but noticeable improvements at a place where thousands pass through daily.
\nWhat commuters should know
\nA few notes for the coming months: there will be noise and dust at times, especially at the points where machines are loaded and unloaded. The construction work should proceed in stages so that the most important access points remain open. For travelers with rolling suitcases or strollers, it is advisable to allow a few extra minutes or use alternative entrances.
\nThe officials emphasize keeping the works as short as possible. If everything goes smoothly, the new escalators will be in operation in time for the next peak travel period — ideal when you stagger up the stairs in the morning and still catch the train.
\nA slice of everyday life that stands out when it's missing
\nThese aren’t big headlines being made, but improvements like these make the difference between a chaotic transfer and a functioning connection. Those standing on the platform on a windy morning and hearing the automatic announcements will surely welcome the new calm. And yes: there are plenty of reasons to celebrate the small joy of a functioning escalator on the way down.
