Three suspects, apparently brought in specifically to steal, were arrested in Port d'Andratx thanks to vigilant guests and the local police.
Arrest in Port d'Andratx: How vigilance at the harbor thwarted a plot
On Saturday around 2:00 PM, a plan that seemed to be carried out with cold routine came to an end. Three people – two men and a woman – were arrested at the Port d'Andratx harbor after several female tourists and locals grew suspicious and alerted the police.
What the officers found
The local police arrived shortly after. In the trunk of the rented car lay several items of clothing still with tags. In addition, the officers found items in the suspects' personal belongings that pointed to theft. The three suspects could not provide a plausible explanation for where the goods came from.
A resident who wished to remain anonymous said: 'I have often seen odd types who only glance and then disappear. This time I noted the number and called the police.' Such tips were apparently decisive.
How the group operated
According to investigators, the arrested are three allegedly known pickpockets from Romania. They are said to have traveled specifically to Mallorca, stayed in a hotel on Playa de Palma, and moved around the island in a rental car to targeted locations. The mobility factor—a car with a short-term license plate—made it easy for them to change sites.
The police arrested the suspects on suspicion of theft. Further investigations are underway to determine whether there are accomplices or whether other thefts are connected to them.
Why this issue matters
Crime tourism is not a new buzzword here. In recent years, reports of organized gangs that target vacation destinations have increased. On Mallorca this often affects busy beaches and promenades, where distracted visitors are easy targets.
However, cooperation is important: cafes, taxis, hotel staff, and guests can help with vigilant eyes—as on this Saturday in Port d'Andratx. The police praised the prompt reporting and emphasized that tips from the public often provide the crucial lead.
What travelers should watch out for
A few simple rules help: carry bags securely closed, don't leave valuables visible on a sun lounger, be wary of supposed offers of help from strangers. And: if in doubt, call 091 immediately, or visit the nearest police station.
The investigations continue. For the moment, though: a small victory for the harbor promenade and everyone who stayed alert.
