Road closures due to car race: 550 Challenge rolls across Mallorca

Starting this evening, the 550 Challenge rally will bring 50 teams and closed mountain and coastal roads. Here are the key closures and tips for residents and visitors.

Cars, closures, and nerves of steel: What’s on Mallorca today

\n

Starting this evening, some routes on the island will require you to stay calm and follow detours. The 550 Challenge Mallorca starts and will send around 50 teams from eight countries through Mallorca’s mountain and coastal roads for three days. A total of 550 kilometers are on the program—and, unfortunately, several road closures that will be felt mainly in the west and north.

\n

Where exactly will closures occur?

\n

The first closures begin in the evening between Estellencs and Andratx and on the link from Calvià to Coll Sa Creu. If you were planning to take the coastal road around 7:00 p.m. today, better leave an hour earlier or seek an alternative route. For tomorrow, several sections in the north of the island are scheduled; on Saturday, traffic focuses on the west of the island.

\n

What does that mean for residents and guests?

\n

If you live in towns such as Andratx, Calvià or Port Adriano or had dinner plans there: expect detours, delayed buses and temporary restrictions on taxi services. The organizers have marked off closed zones; emergency routes remain clear, but parking will be tight. A good tip: schedule shopping or appointments outside the stated race times or use the local park-and-ride options.

\n

Before and after the stages, many race cars will be moored in the Port Adriano harbor for viewing—a magnet for photography enthusiasts. Expect crowds there and a mix of classic sports cars and newer racing cars. And yes: you can occasionally smell rubber and espresso in the air. Not a bad scent if you like cars.

Practical notes

\n

- Please follow the official detour signs and the instructions of the course marshals.\n- Public buses may be delayed; check timetables at short notice.\n- Emergency vehicles have priority at all times – keep driveways clear.\n- If you are mobile: set off early or choose a quieter side road.

\n

The event is spectacular, but it also brings everyday inconveniences. If you are travelling in the affected regions: take a deep breath, allow a bit more time, and perhaps spend the afternoon at a café in Port Adriano. The prospect of fast classics is, after all, an unusual weekend bonus.
