Severe Storm Brings Mallorca's Interior to a Standstill

It rained hard through the night—so intense that many of us could hardly sleep. Around 11:30 p.m., heavy thunderstorms moved in, accompanied by torrential rain and, in places, hail. The duration: about an hour and a half to two hours of intense showers, followed by intermittent downpours. The island's interior was hit hardest.

Selva and Inca Particularly Affected

The municipalities of Selva and Inca reported most of the problems. Small roads in the town centers were under water within minutes, several basements filled, garage doors would not open. Residents reported raging streams over the street Carrer Major in Selva; the situation there was briefly confusing. In Inca, washed-in earth and gradients at driveways blocked some households.

The Balearic government counted 19 deployments by morning – most due to flooding, some due to smaller landslides. The fire brigade (Bomberos) and local fire departments worked together with Protección Civil and the Guardia Civil. I met a firefighter on site who said: \"We had to act quickly to ensure no one gets trapped in basements.\"

Rescue in Felanitx

In Felanitx there was a dramatic moment: a car stalled in a pool of water, the occupants could not free themselves. Firefighters helped; the person was unharmed but visibly chilled as they were pulled from the vehicle. Such scenes show how quickly normal streets can become dangerous.

Palma and the Airport Felt the Effects as Well

At Palma Airport there were delays; several flights started later than planned. Travelers waited longer in processing, luggage belts paused briefly. Those heading to the airport early today should allow extra time: on the access roads, puddles formed, traffic stalled at junctions.

The municipal utilities worked on minor flushing of the sewer network, and road maintenance crews cleared mud from driveways. In many places neighbors helped with sandbags and pumps—a reassuring sight on an island like this.

What This Means for the Next Hours

The forecast remains cautious: local showers may continue; authorities urge avoiding flooded streets and not leaving vehicles in standing water. If you have a basement, check that pumps are working and supplies are ready. If new hazards arise, please call the local emergency numbers and follow the instructions of the responders.
