Valldemossa faces acute water scarcity. Pool filling is prohibited; higher-elevation homes are partly without water. The municipality announces additional conservation measures.
Water shortage in Valldemossa – residents urged to save consciously
\nIn our mountain village, things have been different for days: Whoever is in the Plaça Cartoixa, hears no clinking watering cans anymore, but assurances from the town hall and the whisper of the wells that yield less. The municipal administration has markedly reduced the pressure in the piping network. The goal: to prevent the supply from completely breaking down in the coming days.
\nWhat is now forbidden and who is affected
\nThe main measures are clear: Filling private pools is forbidden; automatic garden irrigation has been stopped. In some higher-lying streets – around Carrer de sa Rectoria and the access roads to Puig – water currently comes out of the tap only intermittently. Several households report that water is available only in the mornings for a short time.
\nHow the municipality is responding
\nAt the town hall there are notices, staff hand out information and answer questions. In addition, according to the announcement, mobile water tanks are on standby – so far they have only been deployed selectively, for example at some nursing homes, to secure basic supply. The mayor appeals over the loudspeaker to everyone: reduce consumption, skip long showers and postpone laundry.
\nA resident who helps daily in the shop on Calle Major dryly says: We already wash our hands in the morning with care. Many people here still take it seriously. The bakery opposite has adjusted its dough preparation, restaurants are cooking more sparingly.
\nCauses and outlook
\nThe cause is the ongoing drought: groundwater levels and well levels have fallen noticeably, rainfall has been lacking. The municipality hopes for rain this weekend – a little relief would already improve many things. If it stays dry, stricter restrictions threaten.
\nPractical tips for everyday life that really help
\nA few simple rules can quickly make a difference: run the dishwasher only when fully loaded, keep showers short, collect rainwater, reuse water from cooking (e.g., for plants) and report leaks immediately. The municipal administration also collects reports of leaks – if you notice a drop, you should report it.
\nThe whole thing feels like a test right now: when the announced showers come, we breathe a sigh of relief. If not, it means adapting, being in solidarity and being a bit more inventive than usual. For many long-time residents of Valldemossa this is not new, but for an increasing number of newcomers it is a hard wake-up call.
\nImportant: Stay informed through the municipality's announcements and check whether you can help neighbors who need assistance.
