Aemet has issued an Orange alert for the entire island. In a short period, large amounts of rainfall are possible—caution advised.

Severe Weather Alert: Orange Warning for All of Mallorca

\n

The weather forecast sounded this morning with a tone you hear in the office, in the corner cafe, and at the market: Aemet has issued the orange warning for the entire island due to heavy rain and thunderstorms. According to the forecast, up to 140 liters per square meter can fall within twelve hours, and at peak times up to 50 liters per square meter in just one hour are possible. Yes, quite intense.

I was early this morning on the promenade in Palma; fishermen are removing nets as a precaution, and on Avinguda de Gabriel Roca you can already see the first loose posters, and the wind vanes are on their way. No reason to panic. But a reason to take care of the small things: secure garbage cans, clear roof terraces, don't park cars in depressions.

\n

Which areas are particularly affected?

\n

The warning applies nationwide, from Alcúdia to Cala d'Or. Particularly vulnerable are low-lying places and streets with poor drainage — the usual problem spots on the MA-19 and in some side streets of Palma. The Tramuntana mountain range can also bring strong showers that quickly run into the valley.

What the authorities advise

\n

The recommendations sound familiar, but they are important: If possible, postpone open appointments, avoid riverbeds, do not park in depressions, and stay at home during heavy rain. Public transport may be delayed; ferries and smaller flights are also not ruled out. The fire department asks that you do not undertake risky rescue attempts and report emergencies via 112.

Practical tips for the next hours

\n
    \n
  • Secure balcony furniture and loose roofs, especially in coastal towns.
  • \n
  • Close basements and underground garages; check fuses if the water rises.
  • \n
  • During heavy rain: keep windows closed, do not drive through flooded streets.
  • \n
  • Farmers: move animals to higher barns and monitor fields.

It is not a winter storm, but the amounts of water are significant. The warning initially lasts until Wednesday morning; after that the weather is expected to ease — Aemet keeps an eye on the situation and updates the notices continuously. I will monitor the webcams and fire department reports and let you know if anything changes. If you are out and about: drive slowly, keep distance, and pay attention to announcements. And if the rain comes — a cup of tea, close the window, and wait; that is sometimes the smartest thing to do.
