Cala Major: 'Premium' Sunbeds for 70 Euros? Environmental Association Files Complaint Against Beach Operators

At Cala Major beach, two price signs stand out: a blue one with the allowed rates and a golden one with a 'Premium' price that is significantly higher. An environmental association has filed a complaint.

Between promenade and water – two prices, a lot of trouble

\n

These days, in the afternoon, along Cala Major's promenade, one almost inevitably encounters the topic: two different price signs, placed side by side, blue and gold. The blue signs name the regular tariff: six euros per day per sunbed and umbrella – that makes 18 euros for two sunbeds and one umbrella. The golden signs suddenly offer a \"premium\" combination: 70 euros.

\n

This is not a small surcharge, this is a jump. A local environmental association has therefore filed an official complaint with the competent coast authority. They accuse the operators of offering prices not covered by the city's permits.

\n

What exactly is being criticized

\n

According to the complaint, controls show that there are about a hundred of these sunbeds declared as \"premium\". In addition, environmental protectionists criticize that two temporary kiosks on the beach stand closer together than allowed by regulations: a mandatory minimum distance of 100 meters is not being observed.

\n

The scene is odd: a tourist looks at the golden sign, rubs his eyes and asks a vendor about the difference. The answer is often evasive—\"better place\", \"larger shade structure\"—but in the permit documents these premium elements do not appear.

\n

What could happen now

\n

The Coast Directorate General examines the report. If it turns out the prices are indeed impermissible, violators face fines or requirements. For beachgoers this would be a relief — especially when clear, uniform signs apply and, unusually, no gold hue glitters above the sand.

\n

Practical observation: Many locals are annoyed not only by the prices but by the confusion of the signage. \"Before, everything was clearer,\" says a café owner on the promenade at 10:30 a.m. \"Now there's confusion and annoyance—and during peak season, like now, it's particularly unpleasant.\"

\n

The coming weeks will show whether authorities and landlords adjust the prices or whether the dispute ends up before court or administrative authorities. Until then, it's worth taking a closer look at the sign before paying.
