Short, relaxed, and family-friendly: Palma takes to the bike
\nThis coming Sunday Palma again makes space for cycling. Meeting point is at 10:30 AM at Plaza Juan Carlos I – ideal if you want to grab a quick coffee from the street stand around the corner. The loop leads leisurely along the Ramblas and the Camí de Jesús to Sa Riera Park. All in all it is just under three kilometers, with no steep climbs, so really something for families, relaxed riders, and returners on two wheels.
\nThe tour is part of European Mobility Week and is organized by local traffic experts and the Mobi Palma group. You can tell immediately: this is not a race. The accompaniment rides at snail's pace, there are short stops, and the atmosphere feels more like a Sunday excursion than a sports event. Those arriving at 10:15 AM usually find a few participants tightening the last bolt on the saddle or feeding a child.
\nPractical first: Participation is free, registration online via mobipalma.mobi. For the start it's advisable to arrive a little earlier – finding a spot, a little chat with neighbors, and the usual inflating of the tires. A helmet belongs on Mallorca as good practice; don't forget a water bottle. And yes, a small rain poncho can come in handy, the weather here changes in ten minutes.
\nThe route itself is purposely simple. Those who know the Ramblas know that you ride right through the heart of the city: cobblestones alternate with smooth promenade, here and there a street musician, a dog going around. The target at Sa Riera Park is perfect for a picnic, for chatting or simply for resting – playground included, in case the kids still have energy.
\nOrganizationally this whole thing is open and relaxed. There are no pro rules, no starting numbers, only volunteers who accompany the group and assist at the main intersections. Parents with trailers and cargo bikes are welcome, as are seniors who want to use cycling as a daily means of transport. The message is simple: share urban space, slow down, breathe in the fresh air.
\nIf you're still unsure: just come by. Many participants come regularly, others try it for the first time. And in the end there is often this small feeling that Palma breathes a little more quietly on a Sunday. More information and registration: mobipalma.mobi. See you at the Plaza – give me a ring, I’m usually out there with a worn white helmet and too many reflectors.
