While Palma and the southwest enjoyed sun and nearly normal streets, eastern towns like Artà and Son Servera experienced heavy rain and hail with partially flooded roads.
Between sun-seekers and floods – a day with two faces
Today the island again showed how differently the weather can be here. While at around 11:30 I drank a coffee at the Paseo Marítimo and enjoyed the sun over Palma, friends in the east of the island received a completely different message: thunderstorms, hail, and standing water on the streets in places.
East especially affected: Son Servera, Artà and Capdepera
The Spanish weather service AEMET reported for the north and east a continuing Yellow warning due to persistent rainfall and thunderstorms. In Son Servera hail even fell in the afternoon; according to reports the ice pellets made roads slippery and some driveways were partially blocked. Artà reported an especially intense phase: in half an hour about 40 liters per square meter fell, according to local witnesses. Lower-lying parts were flooded, cellars filled, and some residents had to lay out sandbags in front of doors.
Capdepera also reported floods at normally critical spots. I spoke on the phone with a neighbor who said: “You can see the cars only halfway in the water, the village road is impassable.” Such images are familiar from earlier heavy rain events – unpleasant because they come suddenly.
Palma and the southwest: sun, wind and toppled trees
At the same time, Palma in the afternoon showed almost paradisical conditions with temperatures around 30 degrees. However the effects were not entirely absent: on the Paseo Marítimo several trees toppled over in strong gusts. In Calvià streets were temporarily closed because uprooted trees and mud blocking the roadways.
An unusual incident occurred at the entrance to Port Adriano: a small landslide led to the partial closure of a lane, drivers had to pass slowly and carefully. Such events remind that even “warm” weather has its quirks, especially after heavy rain.
What next? Forecast and tips
AEMET expects the rainfall in the east and north to ease slowly, but the warning level will remain in effect for some areas. For Thursday meteorologists expect mostly clear skies and again temperatures up to 30 degrees – a real improvement for most island residents and visitors.
Practical tip from me: If you need to go to low-lying places, drive slowly, avoid standing water, and do not leave electronics in the trunk if it could flood slightly. Those living in the east, please check basements and drains; small amounts of water quickly become a nuisance.
A final look from the island
Such “divided” days are not rare here. Morning blue skies, afternoon chaos. I saw two moods today: people on the beach with sunscreen, others next to me on the phone organizing buckets and shovels. Let’s hope the damages stay manageable and the roads are free again soon.
Short: South and West sunny and warm, North and East with local storms – stay careful.
