Habaneras will echo again today and tomorrow at Playa d’en Repic: musicians in small boats play sea shanties, with affordable special trains from Palma.
When the Boats Sing: Habaneras at Playa d’en Repic
\nThere are moments when music simply fits with salty air and the evening sun. In Port de Sóller, that’s happening again this weekend: several ensembles set off from Playa d’en Repic and play Habaneras — those melancholic sailor songs with Cuban origins that have been a tradition here for decades.
\nWhat’s special: The musicians cruise through the bay in small boats and play from the water. Those sitting on the beach hear the voices as if they were coming from far out. Children are digging, an older couple holds hands, and the red flash—the Sóller Railway—puffs almost romantically up the winding hills. Pretty Mallorca, if you will.
\nPractical Information for Visitors
\nFor people from Palma there is again an affordable connection: on Saturday evening at 18:30 a special train to Sóller departs; from there you continue with the historic tram to the harbor. The return trip is around midnight by bus. The ticket costs 12 euros and is sold at the Sóller train station in Palma — there between 09:00 and 15:00 at the daytime ticket desk.
\nOn Sunday the special train starts at 15:10 from Palma; again continuing with the tram to Port de Sóller. The return is scheduled for 21:00. If you’re flexible, bring a jacket: in the evening the tram winds across the bay.
\nWhat to Expect on Site
\nThe mood is relaxed and a bit old-fashioned. Seats on the wooden benches along the promenade fill up quickly; if you want to get closer, bring a towel or a small blanket. By the beach there are small stalls with drinks and tapas — nothing big, but authentic. And yes: you hear the singers’ voices, the clapping of the waves, and sometimes a boat engine in the background. That’s exactly why it’s worth it.
\nOne tip at the end: If you pull out your camera or phone, pay attention to the lighting. The best pictures are taken just before sunset, when the bay turns golden and the Habaneras sound even better.
\nHave fun listening — and if you’re heading there on short notice: don’t forget good shoes for the cobblestones.
