Nearly one million euros worth of jewelry were stolen from a delivery van on Paseo Borne. One suspect was arrested at Palma airport, two remain at large.
Jewel Heist on Paseo Borne: One Arrested, Two on the Run
It sounds like something out of a crime film, but the scene really happened last Friday: At around 4:30 PM, unknown assailants stole a shipment from a luxury jewelry boutique on Paseo Borne in Palma. Passersby, cafe tables and the usual pigeons were all there. The delivery van driver only realized later that the load was missing.
What exactly happened
According to police, the transport contained twelve packages with a total of 20 pieces of jewelry. The value: just under €973,000. Two men followed the delivery van, cut a hole in the rear door at a loading zone and pulled the packages from the vehicle. Shortly afterwards, a gray car waited, with which they fled.
Surveillance cameras in the area captured parts of the crime and set the investigation in motion. A lead led to a rental car apparently used for the transport.
Arrest and Search
A few days after the theft, investigators identified one of the suspects. The man, according to authorities 51 years old and from Ecuador, was arrested at Palma airport as he apparently planned to fly to Barcelona. His apartment in the Cas Capiscol district was searched with a court order — the officers did not find anything decisive there.
The investigation continues: Police are now trying to locate the other participants and secure the stolen jewelry. Statements from the victims and analysis of footage from the cameras are still ongoing.
What the Situation Means for the Area
The Paseo Borne is busy during the day, especially on weekdays. Deliveries to jewelry stores are routine here, yet there is a sour aftertaste: when professionals act so targeted, it suddenly feels unsafe for merchants and pedestrians. Residents report that delivery vans often stop briefly while drivers shuttle loads between restaurants and shops — creating gaps that thieves can exploit.
For the national police, the case is now a priority, not least because of the high value of the loot. If anyone saw anything or can provide information about the gray car, they are urged to contact the authorities.
I was there briefly on Saturday myself: the street looked routine, but with a quiet tension. You’d rather hear such stories in a film.
