Work on the second phase of Magaluf's promenade begins in November. Planned are natural stone paving, modern lighting, and new supply lines—completed before the next season.
Start in November: More space by the water, but not everything will change
\nIn Magaluf, excavators will roll again next November: the second phase of the seafront promenade is coming. Those who have walked along the harbour in recent weeks have already seen the yellow markings and the plan drafts. The municipality of Calvià has awarded the second package of works – with a volume of just under 1.9 million euros. The construction time is estimated at around six months, so that everything is clean and walkable by the start of the season.
\nWhat exactly is planned
\nOn the plan, concretely: new natural stone paving on the footpath, modern street- and promenade lighting, and the renewal of supply lines for water, wastewater, and electricity. A new automatic irrigation system that will be fed with treated water is also planned. Small, shady palm islands are to be placed in some areas – but there will be no additional dunes or beach embankments planned, as some residents had suspected.
\nA local cafe operator at Playa de Magaluf said meanwhile that he hopes for less construction noise in the peak season: \"If everything is finished by the end of April, we can start the season more relaxed.\" Sounds reasonable, after all this is the financial year for many here.
\nFor residents and tourists
\nThe works are to be organized so that access to the beach sections is preserved as much as possible. Nevertheless: short-term closures of certain promenade sections and detours are to be anticipated. The municipality wants to inform early, says a spokesperson – via notices, online updates and through the tourist information office.
\nThere is also a small environmental plus: the planned irrigation uses recycled water, and the choice of materials focused on durable natural stones. Whether this will ultimately mean lower maintenance costs remains to be seen. And yes, some may find the new lighting perhaps a bit too modern for Magaluf – a matter of taste.
\nWhat to watch
\nImportant: keep to the schedule. Six months sounds tight, but realistic if no major surprises occur. For the business people of the seafront area and the residents, this would be a relief. I will pass by there more often in the coming weeks, coffee in hand, to see how the construction site develops. Quick tip for readers: if you like room to stroll, plan your walks during the day and look at the notice signs at the entrances.
\nMore information will be available as soon as the municipality publishes the detail plans. Until then: keep an eye on your next beach walk – the promenade is changing, but it remains our coastline for breathing and going out.
