Between the jetty and Club de Mar, a green space has emerged with over 1,800 trees, a playground, drinking stations, and its own bike path. The official opening is on November 16.
New waterfront green belt: A small oasis on the Paseo Marítimo
\nIf you walk along the Paseo Marítimo these days, you can smell fresh soil and newly planted trees — and hear children already testing the new playground equipment. The city has created a green space between the excursion-boat pier and the Club de Mar that will be officially opened in the coming weeks.
\nWhat’s new?
\nThe development includes more than 1,800 trees, a child-friendly playground, several drinking fountains, and numerous shady benches. For cyclists like us: a dedicated bike path runs through the park and connects parts of the Paseo with the beachfront promenade. Small details like waste bins with a separation system and plant beds with native vegetation show that durability was considered—not just quick photo spots.
\nWhy this matters for Palma
\nThe harbor promenade had long been a parking lot — loud, bright, and often too hot on summer days. This greening expansion creates shade, reduces heating, and offers locals and visitors a place to catch their breath. Dog walkers, parents with strollers, and commuters on the bike path will increasingly pass each other here in the future. I saw yesterday afternoon a couple sharing a coffee on one of the new benches and saying: Finally a place where you can sit and stay.
\nConstruction phase and opening
\nWork is in the final phase; the official opening is planned for November 16 according to the city administration. Craftspeople, gardeners, and municipal staff are currently finalizing the last details: lighting, signage, and drinking stations. The noise of the construction site is slowly giving way to the rustling of young leaves — a small, tangible end to a larger redevelopment of the harbor promenade.
\nCriticism and daily life
\nNot everyone is enthusiastic: some nearby business owners worry about delivery zones, others ask for regular maintenance. That needs to be said — a park only works with upkeep and routine. Still, the idea of making the coast a bit friendlier seems promising in practice.
\nThose who stop by in the coming weeks should wear sturdy shoes and bring a bottle of water — the paths are new and a bit dusty. But you can sit down already. And I think many will do so.
