Palma: Major Street Closures Around Cathedral for Patronal Festival

👁 2487

Due to the Patronal Festival in honor of Mare de Déu de la Salut, Avenida Adolfo Suárez will be partially closed this weekend. Bus routes, parking and access are affected—please plan accordingly.

Everything You Need to Know About the Closures in Palma

The patronal festival in honor of Mare de Déu de la Salut brings music, faith, and many people back to the old town on Friday and Saturday. If you plan to reach the area around the cathedral this weekend, you should leave your car at home. The city council and police urge you to do so — for good reason.

What it's about: The big concert in Parc de la Mar is the magnet, and around the Seu there will be heavy closures. Avenida Adolfo Suárez in front of the cathedral will be fully or partially closed at set times. This affects not only private cars but also parking exits, taxis, and delivery traffic.

The main times at a glance

  • Friday, September 5: 23:00–00:30 – closure toward Porto Pi.
  • Night from Friday to Saturday: 00:30–02:00 – closure toward the airport.
  • Saturday, September 6 from 12:00 until Sunday, September 7 at 04:00 – complete full closure of Avenida Adolfo Suárez in both directions.

Additionally, the exit from Parc de la Mar to the highway will be blocked at certain times (Friday 23:00–00:30 and Saturday 12:00–04:00). This may surprise drivers who need to head off on vacation or to a ferry.

Public transport and stops

The municipal EMT bus line 25 will be diverted during the full closure. The usual stop at Parc de la Mar (stop number 1982) is cancelled during this period. The detour goes via Porta des Camp, the Avenidas, and Plaça de la Reina – plan a few extra minutes, especially if you are traveling with luggage.

What locals and visitors should consider

If you usually drive to the cathedral: not this time. It is better to come on foot, by bus or by taxi that drops you outside the restricted zone. Cyclists and scooter riders should watch for temporary closures – near Parc de la Mar it is often a pedestrian zone during the event.

If you want to park in nearby parking garages, arrive early. Access points may be checked at short notice, and the police redirect vehicles. Expect increased pedestrian flows: Calle de la Sal, Passeig des Born and Plaça Major fill up quickly, especially in the evening.

Tips to avoid ending the evening in traffic

  • Plan at least 30–60 minutes more travel time.
  • Use alternative EMT stops or Park & Ride options outside the historic center.
  • If you are a resident: check ID or resident regulations if you must enter the zone.

The authorities are on site to manage traffic and keep safety routes clear. If you are unsure, calmly ask a patrol officer or traffic staff – a quick hint usually helps you find the best route. And yes: it will be crowded, but the mood is often good. So: put on your shoes, bring patience, and enjoy the evening – stress-free in search of a parking space.
