Sa Pobla Renovates Town Center: Over Two Million from EU Funds Flow into Calle Comerç

With more than two million euros from EU funds, Sa Pobla has refreshed its town center. New trees, wider sidewalks and a small park on the former Guardia Civil site are intended to enliven everyday life and local commerce.

Sa Pobla makes the town center more livable

If you stroll through Sa Pobla in the morning right now, you notice immediately: something has changed here. Calle Comerç feels more open, no longer as cramped as before. The paving has been renewed in places, the sidewalks are wider — enough room for strollers, e-scooters and the typical Saturday shopping stroll.

More space, more light, more green

The whole project was financed with more than two million euros from EU funds. No small sum for a municipality of our size. The works took several weeks: curbs were removed, new street furniture, LED streetlights, and freshly planted trees at strategic points that will finally provide shade in high summer. There are now also lower curb ramps so that older people and wheelchair users can cross the street more easily.

Calle Comerç was deliberately decongested. Residents say the new sidewalks are pleasantly wide — you can walk past a café without standing right in its window. A shop owner told me last week that she had already noticed more people sauntering along the street at a walking pace and looking at things instead of just rushing through.

From Guardia Civil grounds to a small city park

A special detail: a new green and recreation area has been created on the former grounds of the Guardia Civil. Not a big park, more a meeting place, small lawns, benches and a few Mediterranean shrubs — exactly what the neighborhood was missing. In the evening the lighting subtly highlights the paths; children run by, dog owners stop, and you hear more voices from the surrounding cafés than construction noise.

Of course not everyone has only praise. Some residents report dust and detours during the construction phase, and a few business owners are still hoping for additional parking spaces or markings so that delivery vehicles do not end up in chaotic stopping. The municipality announced that such points will be addressed with small adjustments in the coming weeks.

Overall, Sa Pobla now appears friendlier and more accessible. For many older residents the shady benches and shallower crossings are an immediate relief. For business owners the measure could mean more passing trade in the medium term. And anyone who walks down the newly designed Calle Comerç on a sunny afternoon notices: the town has room to breathe again.
