If you have been walking along the coast in recent days, you may have noticed: the first barriers are already in place, signs are taped to lampposts, and construction vehicles are ready. In November, Magaluf will begin the second phase of the renovation of the seafront promenade. The Calvià Town Council awarded the works for just 1.9 million euros. The planned construction period is about six months — to be completed in time for the next season.

What exactly will be done

The plans sound concrete: New natural stone pavements should make the walking routes more attractive and robust. Old cables and pipes will be replaced: water, wastewater and electrical lines will be renewed, so that holes do not have to be ripped open again in a few years. In addition, modern lighting is planned that will also provide more safety at night. For me personally, a plus: they are using an irrigation system that works with recycled water – not every place does this.

A small surprise for beach walkers are the announced \"Palm Oasis\" – tiny green islands with shaded spots. Unlike in the first phase, there will be no new dune sections this time. This reassures residents in some places who were worried about altered beach landscapes.

How it will affect visitors and residents

Practically this means: In the coming months there may be occasional short-term closures and detours, especially in the mornings when the noise level of the machines is high. The construction noise is expected to be concentrated and not spread throughout the day, according to the planners. Local business owners hope that the works take place outside the high season – no sandwich line in front of the cafe, no tourist chaos with buses and excavators at the same time.

For families with strollers or people with limited mobility, the new natural stone surface could be a real win. Not everything is fully thought out yet: seating, waste bins or bicycle stands are mentioned in the plans, but some details are still missing. I have heard that at some places benches with a view of the sea are planned – that would be nice, especially on calm afternoons.

A look ahead

The decision to renew parts of the infrastructure underground and to implement sustainable irrigation at the same time is a step in the right direction. Will the works really be completed by the start of the season? That remains to be seen – experience shows that weather, material deliveries or unexpected foundations can delay deadlines. Still: for Magaluf this is a visible sign that the municipality is investing in coastal maintenance.

Those who walk there more often will notice changes: new lighting, freshly laid paving, small palm island features and – hopefully – fewer puddles after a heavy rain.
