AEMET warns: Friday will bring strong gusts and heavy rainfall to Mallorca. Ferries could be canceled, temperatures may drop — and summer will be back soon.
Thursday Evening: Weather Change Comes Quickly
Just T-shirt weather, today already storm warning. The Spanish weather service AEMET has issued a storm warning level for Friday for Mallorca. What does that mean exactly? Expect strong east wind, gusts up to around 80 km/h, rough seas, and locally showers.
What residents and visitors will notice
At the harbor you notice it first: small boats must be better moored, ferry schedules could be disrupted. If you're along the coast, leave the umbrella at home – wind gusts make it nearly useless and it will blow away. In sheltered street canyons it will just be damp, at exposed places like Passeig or Port de Sóller it can get really uncomfortable.
On the mainland, regions are also affected: between Valencia and Barcelona models predict heavy showers, in parts of Castellón up to around 30 liters per square meter locally. Thunderstorms are not ruled out.
Temperatures: briefly cool, then a heat rebound
With the rain and wind the temperature will drop at first – a small foretaste of autumn, if you will. But you can't do without summer: starting Sunday the models project significantly higher values again. Inland of the island, peaks around 35 to 37 °C are possible again, around Santa María del Camí or Algaida; Sóller and Pollença could also climb back toward 35 °C.
Practical tips
A few simple things help avoid trouble: secure garden furniture, do not leave small boats unattended, pay attention to current AEMET alerts and the harbor authority's notices. And if you have a ferry or a flight planned: Friday morning is prudent — evening connections are generally more stable — but here the weather decides, not the schedule.
In the afternoon I had a quick espresso at Passeig; the clouds moved in quickly. It's typical: The weather on Mallorca often changes its mind. Stay informed — and pack sunscreen and a sweater just in case.
