From now on, uniform taxi tariffs apply in several municipalities in Mallorca's north and central region. For passengers, the changes mean more flexibility; for drivers, new rules.
More flexibility on short trips, new rules for drivers
\nStarting this Sunday, many towns in Mallorca's north and the island's center will drop the 'only within the municipality' principle: In municipalities such as Alcúdia, Inca, Pollença and Sa Pobla there is now a uniform taxi fare. Practically, that means: a taxi may pick up passengers outside its own municipality.
\nHow long does the rule apply?
\nThe merger was initially decided for one year. Afterwards there is the possibility to extend it up to four times – if administration, drivers and citizens agree. Two more places, Binissalem and Llubí, have already announced they will join soon.
\nWhat changes for passengers?
\nIf you are waiting at Plaza Major in Inca or at the harbor of Alcúdia, the taxi should no longer be allowed to refuse just because the ride goes to the neighboring municipality. For us residents this often means: fewer empty trips, shorter waiting times in the evening, and better accessibility of places that previously lay between the lines.
\nImportant: The basic tariff structures remain in place — it's mainly about the spatial application. No general fare reductions have been announced; it's about uniformity, not discounts.
\nHow do the drivers react?
\nOpinions are mixed. Some drivers welcome the new rule: previously they could say they can take guests when they are heading to the neighboring city; others worry about more competition and about details like shifts, license limits and the distribution of stand placements.
\nThe municipalities say they are cooperating to coordinate processes: agreements on taxi stands, common signs and information sheets for customers should follow in the coming weeks.
\nPractical tip
\nIf you will call a taxi soon: ask just before boarding whether the ride to your desired destination is possible. Many radio bases and ride apps will adjust their settings in the coming days. And if something remains unclear, it helps to note down the number of the taxi or the central — that helps with later inquiries.
\nWhat remains to be observed?
\nWhether the measure actually leads to shorter waiting times and fewer empty trips will be evident in the first months. It will also be interesting to see how the cooperation between municipalities and taxi associations develops and whether more places follow. For many of us it's a small relief in daily life – especially on weekends and at night when connections are otherwise thin.
\nIn short: more mobility for passengers, new coordination questions for the industry. We will stay tuned and report if Binissalem and Llubí officially participate or if changes arise in practice.
