In a serious industrial accident in Santa Margalida, a 57-year-old man died when several concrete slabs collapsed on him. The Guardia Civil is investigating.
Tragic accident in Santa Margalida
On Tuesday afternoon, a factory street in Santa Margalida became a crime scene. At around 3:00 PM, rescuers were alerted after several heavy concrete slabs toppled and buried a worker. The man, a 57-year-old employee of the company, died at the scene.
Colleagues immediately called emergency services and tried to help. Responders arrived quickly, but any chance of saving him was in vain. On site were units of the local police, the Guardia Civil, several fire brigades, and ambulances. An on-call judge and a forensic pathologist arrived later to assess the situation and handle formalities.
How could this happen?
What exactly caused multiple concrete elements to slide is still unclear. The Guardia Civil has taken over the investigations. The focus is now on possible violations of safety regulations and whether the required safety measures were followed. Technical reasons, improper storage, or human error are being examined.
From the surrounding area, it was heard that the afternoon seemed unusually quiet — the small bakery on the corner had closed, and pallets lay on Carrer de Clavet. Such details will be looked at more closely by investigators now.
The mood in the community
In Santa Margalida, the incident has caused shock. Colleagues and neighbors are visibly affected. People here know each other; in small towns you talk, share a coffee, help out. Now only the waiting for official results remains and mourning for a family person and coworker, whose name has not been released for now out of respect for relatives.
Work accidents painfully remind us how quickly routine can become dangerous. Authorities announced they will conduct the investigations quickly and thoroughly. Until the results are available, much of it is speculation. But for the bereaved, the question of fault and responsibility is one that needs answers soon.
